According to Spanish analysts, Sevilla’s decision to sell centre-back Diego Carlos to Aston Villa in the summer isn’t going as planned.

The Brazilian moved to Villa Park in June, with the club spending roughly £26 million. Later in the summer, Sevilla confirmed that Carlos’ centre-back partner, Jules Kounde, had been sold to Barcelona. The club is estimated to have received approximately €100 million in total for the two players, including add-ons.

However, it appears that the club may be regretting cashing in on the two players almost nine months after the transactions were completed. Sevilla is now ranked 13th in La Liga, despite picking up three points with

a 2-1 win over Almeria on Sunday afternoon.

The win followed a run of three league games without a win, including a 3-2 loss against Osasuna and a 6-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid. The goal conceded against Almeria was the 40th conceded by the side so far this season, compared with just 30 conceded in all of last season with Carlos and Kounde as the centre-back partnership. Spanish outlet AS have described the decision to let the two defenders go in the summer as “very expensive”.

Carlos made an instant impression at Villa, impressing in his first two Premier League games for the club beforesuffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. The centre-back has since been undergoing rehabilitation, and made a much awaited comeback to the squad as an unused substitute in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United.
